Mal Peet begins this heartwarming story by introducing the narrators of the book. They include the best soccer reporter in all of South America, Paul Faustino of La Nacion (popular newspaper in Brazil) who interviews the goal keeping phenom, El Gato. El Gato begins to tell his incredible journey of how he went from a hardworking boy in poor logging town in Brazil to winning the World Cup and becoming the world's most accomplished goal keeper. In this Chapter Paul asks El Gato of his background. His life before the game. Gato explains his hometown as nothing but jungle and machinery. The mens' lives in the town revovled around two things only. The lumber mill in which everybody seemed to work at and soccer. The men were obsessed with it and everybody played. Everybody except for him. He was terrible at soccer and hardly touched the ball in games. So what did he do instead?
